Aji Community Elders Ban Illicit Social Media Content, Impose Heavy Traditional Fines On Defaulters

AJI, ENUGU STATE — Traditional authority has intersected with modern digital governance in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area after the eldest man (Onyeishi) and traditional council of Aji community publicly banned the circulation of illicit and pornographic content on social media by all community members.

​Addressing residents at the village square, the community leader declared that explicit online displays by sons and daughters of Aji—regardless of whether they reside within the village or in the diaspora—will no longer be tolerated. The traditional council stated that public moral conduct directly impacts the image and reputation of the ancestral home.

​To enforce the directive, the council established strict customary sanctions for offenders:

​Traditional Penalty: Anyone found guilty of posting or circulating explicit media will be fined two live cows, 20 large tubers of yam, assorted drinks, and ceremonial items payable directly to the village council.

​Kinship Accountability: In cases where an offender cannot afford the fine, customary liability will automatically transfer to their immediate parents or family members to fulfill on their behalf.

​The decree highlights the enduring influence of customary governance structures (Onyeishi) across Enugu-Ezike communities. Local elders emphasized that while social media offers global connectivity, customary ethics must be upheld to preserve cultural values and prevent public moral decline.
