Enough Is Enough: A Call for People-Centred Leadership in Enugu State

Since assuming office, Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has, in our view, pursued a pattern of anti-people policies that have placed unbearable pressure on ordinary citizens, entrepreneurs, and small businesses across Enugu State.

From repeated demolitions that have displaced business owners, to policies that many residents believe have weakened the hospitality sector, to transportation restrictions that have affected the daily lives and incomes of thousands of people, this administration has, in our opinion, consistently chosen policies that hurt livelihoods instead of protecting them.

Today, another business lies in ruins. Another entrepreneur watches years of hard work disappear. Another group of workers faces uncertainty about tomorrow. Behind every demolished structure are families, employees, suppliers, and young people whose means of survival have been disrupted.

The hospitality industry—once one of the state’s largest employers of labour—has struggled under policies that many operators say have reduced patronage and increased hardship. Rather than creating an enabling environment for investment and enterprise, critics argue that the government has created fear and uncertainty among business owners.

Government exists to empower its people, not to make survival more difficult. Development should never come at the expense of justice, compassion, due process, and respect for the livelihoods of citizens. Progress that leaves thousands of people poorer cannot be celebrated by those who bear its cost.

The people of Enugu deserve a government that listens before it acts, consults before it demolishes, and supports businesses instead of driving them to closure. They deserve leadership that protects investments, creates jobs, respects property rights, and puts the welfare of citizens above political image-making.

The voices of the people cannot be silenced. Every displaced entrepreneur, every unemployed youth, every struggling trader, and every affected family will remember these experiences.

In a democracy, leadership is ultimately judged by the people. The ballot box remains the most powerful instrument through which citizens can demand accountability and choose a different path.

Enugu deserves leadership that builds businesses—not destroys livelihoods.
