Fuel Tanker Explodes In Flames At Ugwu Onyema Along Enugu–Onitsha Expressway
ENUGU, NIGERIA — Emergency services and security agencies have been alerted following a severe fire outbreak along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway on Friday afternoon, August 21, 2026.
The incident occurred at Agu-Abor, Ugwu Onyema, on the bridge corridor heading toward Abor. According to initial eyewitness reports, a fully loaded fuel tanker lost control, overturned, and burst into flames, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky and causing immediate panic among motorists.
The explosion and resulting inferno have brought traffic along the busy inter-state highway to a complete standstill. Firefighters, emergency responders, and road safety officials are mobilizing to contain the blaze, divert oncoming traffic, and prevent further casualties. Drivers traveling between Enugu, Nsukka, and Anambra State are advised to exercise extreme caution and seek alternative routes while containment operations continue.
