GRADUATE SHARES EXPERIENCE OVERCOMING NORTHERN MISCONCEPTIONS TO STUDY AT UNN NSUKKA

A recent graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), from northern Nigeria, has shared her personal experience navigating regional stereotypes after choosing to pursue her higher education in Enugu State.

​Recalling the initial reaction of her family while residing in Gombe State, she revealed that informing them of her admission into UNN was met with strong discouragement. Her relatives expressed deep hesitation and anxiety rooted in longstanding northern misconceptions regarding the Igbo people and the security climate of the South-East region.

​Despite the pressure to decline the offer, she chose to enroll at the Nsukka campus, stepping outside her familiar cultural environment. She noted that living and studying in Enugu State allowed her to experience the local culture firsthand, quickly debunking the distorted narratives and preconceived notions she had grown up with in the North.

​"While I was in Gombe State with my family, I told them I had gained admission to UNN, Nsukka, Enugu State, but they discouraged me from attending. Living there opened my eyes and completely changed the wrong perceptions I grew up hearing."

​Her story highlights the transformative power of inter-regional education in dismantling cultural barriers, promoting national unity, and fostering peaceful coexistence among young Nigerians across ethnic divides.
