Gridlock Strands Travelers For Days On Deplorable Benin-Agbor Bypass Amid Infrastructure Spending Debates

BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Severe gridlock along the Benin-Agbor Expressway and the Benin Bypass corridor in Edo State has left hundreds of interstate travelers, commercial transport operators, and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members stranded for days.  

​The gridlock—caused by deep cratering, failed pavement sections, and severe drainage blockages aggravated by recent rainfalls—has crippled passenger movement between Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt, and Eastern Nigeria. Reports and social media videos from affected travelers show passengers disembarking from commercial buses to trekk long distances with their luggage, create bush paths, or board commercial motorcycles toward Agbor and Onitsha to bypass submerged and impassed stretches.  

​Protesting motorists and local residents along the corridor have voiced frustration over delayed maintenance. Public debate has focused on federal infrastructure allocation, with critics questioning why primary inter-state trade corridors like the Benin Bypass remain in poor condition while large-scale capital investments, such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, receive funding priority.

​Demands for Emergency Works: Citizens and civil society organizations are urging the Federal Ministry of Works to immediately deploy emergency contractors for palliative repairs, grading, and desilting along the Benin-Agbor axis.
