Growing Unrest as Parents’ Association Alleges Poor Student Welfare, Feeding Delays, and Lacking Facilities at GTC Enugu
The newly formed Parents' Association of Government Technical College (GTC), Enugu, operating under the leadership of Chairman Mr. Tochukwu Igwe and Secretary Engr. Mrs. Susan Godfrey, has formally written to the principal, the Enugu State Science and Vocational Schools Management Board, and the Honourable Commissioner for Education to highlight pressing concerns regarding student welfare and operational standards at the institution. While the association expressly emphasizes that their objective is to foster a transparent, constructive partnership rather than confrontation, the letter outlines a series of severe administrative and operational bottlenecks impacting the students daily.
Among the most alarming issues brought to light is the state of student feeding, highlighted by a troubling incident on September 29, 2026. On that day, breakfast failed to reach students properly, particularly affecting those in SS3 (year 3). After finishing the cooked rice and spaghetti, students were asked to return at 1:00 PM for food, but parents remaining on-site reported that the students still had not eaten by 2:30 PM. Beyond nutrition, the parents raised critical questions regarding the academic and practical focus of the technical college. They asked why students are restricted from using computers despite the presence of qualified teachers, and why promised digital learning tablets have seemingly failed to materialize.
Furthermore, the association called attention to multiple financial burdens placed on parents, including repeated charges for new uniforms every term, recurring payments for janitorial services, and compulsory fees for bed space each academic session. Healthcare and infrastructural support also came under heavy criticism, with the parents pointing out that the school sick bay is unequipped, lacking essential drugs, and managed by only a single resident nurse, while the institution still lacks a standard electronic or physical library. The association concluded by demanding clarity on why students are excluded from receiving their monthly technical and vocational education training (TVET) stipends, formally requesting a comprehensive joint meeting on October 8, 2026, to resolve these multi-layered challenges.
