IMO TAKES THE LEAD: FUTO Clinches South-East Slot in JAMB’s ₦5 Million Academic Excellence Awards as Education Policies Yield Results

OWERRI, NIGERIA — The academic community is celebrating a significant victory as Imo State cements its reputation for scholastic excellence. The apex tertiary matriculation body in Nigeria has officially recognized the brilliant performance of the state's academic sector on a national scale.

According to an official circular issued by the Office of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) dated June 28, 2026—publicly documented in the files, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has officially clinched the coveted prize as the South-East Zonal Winner.

The historic initiative, driven by JAMB in partnership with corporate giant Rite Foods Limited, is designed to reward absolute merit, promote academic transparency, and inspire the next generation of Nigerian leaders to pursue educational breakthroughs.

The award ceremony, scheduled to hold on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in Lagos State, will see the FUTO recipient walk away with a massive ₦5,000,000 educational grant. This selection is the result of a rigorous, transparent filtering process tracking top performances across both the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and subsequent institutional Post-UTME screening exercises.

The official institutional winners across the federation include:

South-East Zone: Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)

South-West Zone: University of Lagos (UNILAG)

South-South Zone: University of Uyo (UNIUYO)

North-West Zone: Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia

North-East Zone: University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID)

North-Central Zone: Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA)

For socio-political observers and grassroots educational advocates, FUTO's emergence as the star of the South-East is a direct reflection of a broader systemic success story within Imo State's educational ecosystem. The state's consistent prioritization of human capital development, institutional infrastructure, and support for tertiary institutions has created a fertile ground where students can actively compete and dominate national metrics.

While other regional actors are often called out for diverting critical resources into artificial political praise-singing, the focus in Imo remains steadily locked on upgrading learning standards, funding academic resources, and expanding opportunities for the youth.

As verified in the document signed by JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs, Fabian Benjamin, Ph.D., the high-profile presentation ceremony is expected to draw over 300 elite dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Education, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, and key heads of regulatory agencies like the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The success of the FUTO candidate stands as a proud moment for the people of Imo State, proving that when leadership provides the right enabling environment, the youth will always rise to the occasion, break national records, and bring lasting honor to their communities.
