Ndi Enugu Will Work for Ndi Enugu: Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji's Record of Inclusive Leadership and Opportunity

Leadership is best measured not only by promises but by actions and the opportunities it creates for the people it serves.

When Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji (Nwakaibeya) assumed office as the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, one of the first demonstrations of his leadership philosophy was his commitment to fairness and inclusiveness. It is recalled that a director in one of the agencies under the ministry presented an employment list in which about 85 percent of the proposed candidates were from a single ethnic group. Rather than endorse the imbalance, Chief Nnaji reviewed the list and ensured that it reflected greater equity, creating opportunities for qualified sons and daughters of Enugu State who had previously been underrepresented. Today, Ndi Enugu are among those benefiting from that decision.

His appointments also reflected a deliberate effort to promote competence while ensuring broad representation across Enugu State. Among those who served in his immediate team were:

- His Aide-de-Camp (ADC) from Anambra

- Chief  Protocol Officer from Aninri.

- His Senior Special Assistant on Media from Ozalla, Nkanu.

- His Senior Special Assistant on Administration from Nike Enugu East Local Government Area.

- His Senior Special Assistant on Technical Matters from Akpugo 

- His DSS detail from Ozalla  Nkanu.

- His Driver from Hausa 

Beyond his immediate office, Chief Nnaji facilitated several strategic appointments for qualified Enugu indigenes into important federal positions. These included:

- An indigene of Enugu West appointed as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of a key federal agency.

- An Nkanu woman, the daughter-in-law of Senator Jim Nwobodo, appointed Director of SEDI Enugu.

- An indigene of Udi appointed Pro-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike.

- An indigene of Ugwuoka, Nkanu, appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike.

- An Nsukka indigene appointed Director of Engineering Services at the Imo River Basin Development Authority.

- A woman from Igbo-Eze North appointed to the Governing Board of the Federal University, Dutse.

- A woman from Igbo-Eze South appointed to the Governing Board of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.

These are only a few examples. Several other qualified Enugu indigenes also secured appointments to boards and federal offices during his tenure. In some cases, Chief Nnaji actively supported individuals who were already serving in strategic positions, helping them retain their appointments for another term because of their competence and value to public service.

These examples underscore a leadership style that prioritizes merit, inclusion, and the advancement of Enugu people whenever opportunities arise.

Enugu State is widely recognized as a citadel of learning. Our people possess the knowledge, skills, and experience to excel in every sector, both at home and abroad. The achievements of Enugu indigenes across the world continue to affirm this reality.

As we reflect on these records, it is worth remembering that leadership is ultimately judged by its impact on people. Based on these examples, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji (Nwakaibeya) has demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that qualified Ndi Enugu are not left behind whenever opportunities become available.

Ndi Enugu deserve opportunities, and with leaders who value competence and fairness, Ndi Enugu will continue to work for Ndi Enugu.
