NMA Enugu Condemns Arrest of Prof. Martin A.C. Aghaji, Demands Clarification

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State Branch, has expressed concern over the reported arrest of Emeritus Professor Martin A.C. Aghaji, describing the manner of his arrest as unacceptable while calling on relevant authorities to ensure due process.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting of its State Officers' Council (SOC) held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, the association said it immediately engaged relevant government and security agencies after receiving reports that the distinguished medical scholar was arrested in the early hours of Friday, July 3, 2026.

According to the NMA, consultations were held with the Office of the Security Adviser to the Governor of Enugu State, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the national leadership of the association to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The association noted that as of the time of issuing the communiqué, no official reason had been communicated for Professor Aghaji's arrest.

Following its deliberations, the NMA resolved to strongly condemn the manner in which the renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, academic, and elder statesman was reportedly taken from his residence, while acknowledging the constitutional responsibilities of security agencies. The association stressed that every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity and in accordance with the rule of law.

The council also resolved to convene an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of its members to deliberate on the matter and determine appropriate professional and lawful actions.

Furthermore, the NMA pledged to continue engaging relevant authorities to seek Professor Aghaji's release or ensure that his constitutional rights—including access to his family, legal representation, and medical care where necessary—are fully protected.

The association also said it has formally notified the national leadership of the NMA and requested coordinated intervention in the interest of justice and the protection of members of the medical profession.

The NMA urged its members to remain calm, united, and vigilant while awaiting further directives as it continues to monitor developments surrounding the case.
