Ogbunike Youths Condemn Mob Attack On UNIZIK Professor, Demand Arrest Of Perpetrators And Transparent Probe

AWKA, NIGERIA — The Concerned Youths of Ogbunike Community have expressed shock and deep dismay following viral video footage showing the humiliation and mob assault of Prof. Ifeanyi Sunny Odinye on the campus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.

In a press statement signed by Convener Chief Okey Nwosu and Secretary Chibuike Uloka (MNIPR), the youth body firmly denounced the resort to "jungle justice," stressing that no allegation—proven or unproven—warrants physical violence or public humiliation against any citizen. The group affirmed that constitutional principles guarantee every individual the right to a fair hearing before constituted authorities.

Describing Prof. Odinye as Africa's pioneer indigenous Professor of Chinese Language and a distinguished native of Ogbunike, the community highlighted his decades of academic service, mentorship, and exemplary character. The youth group emphasized his strong moral standing within his household and community, noting his consistent advocacy for the girl-child and a professional record free of unbecoming conduct.

To address the situation and protect the academic's constitutional rights, the Concerned Youths of Ogbunike outlined four key demands:

Immediate Arrest: The swift arrest and prosecution of all individuals who participated in the physical assault on campus.

Transparent Probe: A thorough, impartial investigation into the underlying allegations by university and security authorities, with community and family representatives permitted to observe proceedings.

Medical Care and Safety: Urgent, ongoing medical attention for Prof. Odinye and full institutional guarantees for his personal safety.

Adherence to Due Process: A call on the public and social media users to exercise restraint and avoid prejudging the case until formal investigations are concluded.

The group reaffirmed Ogbunike's steadfast support for their illustrious son, warning that while they trust Nnamdi Azikiwe University and law enforcement agencies to deliver justice fairly, the community reserves the right to take further legitimate legal steps to protect his interests. Official updates on institutional safety policies and administrative procedures remain available through the UNIZIK Information Portal.
