LAGOS, NIGERIA — Digital financial services provider OPay has initiated formal legal steps against social media content creator @haifah_er_abba (Cute Hafserh) following the viral spread of a false notice regarding the company's operational status.

​In a cease-and-desist letter issued by Chief Legal Counsel Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu on August 31, 2026, the fintech firm addressed a post published by the user on August 30. The viral publication falsely informed the public that OPay would proceed on a "long indefinite break" starting September 1 and advised customers to urgently withdraw their funds.

​Characterizing the claims as false, malicious, and defamatory, OPay stated that the publication lacked factual basis and caused significant reputational and commercial harm. The company demanded that the user permanently delete the post, issue a formal retraction, and tender an unreserved apology before 11:59 PM WAT on August 31, warning that failure to comply would trigger full legal proceedings.

​Reaffirming its position, OPay assured its millions of users nationwide that its platform remains fully functional, customer deposits are safe, and its regional offices—including those in Lagos and Abuja—continue normal operations.
