PDP Condemns Ebonyi Governor’s Alleged Remarks, Urges Focus on Governance

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern over remarks allegedly made by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, during a recent political rally, describing them as reckless and capable of heightening political tension in the state.

Addressing journalists at the party's national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Thursday, the PDP said the governor's alleged threat to "consume" opposition members was unbecoming of a public office holder and urged him to channel his efforts toward governance and service delivery.

The party alleged that the governor's comments reflected growing political pressure ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that rather than engaging in political attacks, the administration should account for its performance in office.

Among the issues raised, the PDP questioned the reported expenditure on the renovation of the Ebonyi Airport, the implementation of the state's overseas scholarship programme, the condition of basic education, road projects across local government areas, and other government-funded initiatives.

The opposition party also rejected what it described as attempts to associate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with the governor's political challenges, maintaining that the real contest would be between Governor Nwifuru and the PDP's governorship candidate, Ambassador Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, in the 2027 election.

The PDP further called on security agencies and civil society organisations to take note of the governor's alleged remarks, warning that political disagreements should not be expressed in ways capable of threatening lives or undermining democratic participation.

The party urged the people of Ebonyi State to remain peaceful and continue to exercise their democratic rights, expressing confidence that the electorate would determine the state's future leadership through the ballot box in 2027.
