PDP DEMANDS IMPARTIAL INVESTIGATION, WARNS AGAINST RETURN OF POLITICAL INTIMIDATION IN ENUGU

PDP Raises Alarm Over Reported Attack on Ward Meeting: “The Era of Intimidation Must Not Return”

ENUGU — The reported gunfire and disruption of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward meeting at Ward 3, Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area, have sparked serious concerns over the safety of political activities and the state of democratic engagement in Enugu State.

According to accounts emerging from the incident, two Sienna vehicles and about ten motorcycles allegedly arrived at the venue of the PDP meeting, with some of the individuals reportedly wearing vests associated with the Nkanu West Local Government Area. Gunshots were allegedly fired, resulting in the destruction of canopies and chairs and sending party members and residents fleeing in fear.

These are serious allegations that demand a serious, transparent and impartial investigation.

The critical questions are straightforward:

Who authorised the deployment?

Who were the individuals involved?

Who provided the vehicles and motorcycles?

Who fired the reported shots?

And why should citizens attending a lawful political meeting be subjected to such an alarming experience?

Until a proper investigation is concluded, no individual or institution should be prematurely held responsible. However, the incident raises a broader and deeply troubling question:

IS POLITICAL THUGGERY MAKING A COMEBACK IN ENUGU?

As the 2027 elections draw closer, political tensions are naturally expected to increase. But political competition must never be allowed to degenerate into intimidation, violence or the suppression of legitimate political participation.

Opposition voices have expressed concern that the Akpugo incident could be symptomatic of a growing atmosphere of political hostility in the state. Whether or not that perception is ultimately established by the facts, it deserves the attention of the relevant authorities.

Democracy is built on persuasion, debate and the freedom of citizens to associate with the political parties and candidates of their choice. It cannot thrive where people are afraid to attend meetings, express their views or participate in political activities.

Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, popularly known as Nwakaibie, the PDP governorship candidate, has condemned the reported incident and called for accountability, insisting that anyone found culpable must face the full weight of the law.

2027 MUST BE DECIDED AT THE POLLS — NOT THROUGH INTIMIDATION

The reported Akpugo incident underscores the responsibility of every political actor, regardless of party affiliation, to protect the democratic space ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political contests should be fought with ideas, policies, programmes and a convincing record of service—not through threats, intimidation or violence.

No thug should determine who attends a political meeting.

No gunman should determine who campaigns.

No intimidation should determine who expresses an opinion.

And no act of violence should determine the outcome of an election.

The people must decide.

If the government believes its record deserves the confidence of Ndi Enugu, the appropriate response is to present that record before the electorate, defend its policies, explain its programmes and allow the people to make their judgment.

The electorate deserves an open conversation about governance, taxation, infrastructure, employment, security, economic development and the overall direction of the state.

THE AKPUGO INCIDENT MUST NOT BECOME A POLITICAL NORMAL

Whatever the outcome of the investigation, the reported attack must not be dismissed as merely another political confrontation.

It should serve as a reminder that the preservation of peace and democratic freedom is a collective responsibility.

The relevant authorities must urgently conduct a credible, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident. If any individual is found to have committed a criminal offence, that person should be prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of political affiliation, position or connections.

Enugu belongs to its people.

Its political future must be determined by citizens exercising their constitutional rights—not by intimidation, political violence or the actions of alleged political enforcers.

2027: LET THE PEOPLE SPEAK
