Protest Rocks Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium as Shop Owners, Tenants Oppose Three-Week Eviction Deadline

Ongoing Protest Erupts at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium as Shop Owners, Tenants Reject Three-Week Eviction Notice

Tension heightened on Friday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, as shop owners and tenants staged a peaceful protest over the three-week notice directing them to vacate the stadium premises.

The protesters, comprising traders, business operators, and other occupants within the stadium complex, expressed concern over the short timeframe provided for relocation. They argued that many businesses have operated within the facility for years and that the notice does not allow sufficient time to secure alternative locations or adequately prepare for relocation.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the demonstrators appealed to the Enugu State Government to reconsider the deadline and engage affected stakeholders in meaningful dialogue. According to them, an extension of the notice period would help reduce the economic hardship that could result from the abrupt displacement of businesses and livelihoods.

The eviction notice follows the state government's decision to commence a comprehensive renovation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium as part of broader efforts to modernize the facility and restore its status as a premier sporting destination.

While many of the protesters acknowledged the importance of rehabilitating the stadium, they urged the government to adopt a more humane and consultative approach by providing adequate time and support for affected tenants to relocate.

As of the time of filing this report, the protest remained peaceful, while the affected shop owners and tenants continued to call on the authorities to review the three-week ultimatum in the interest of fairness and economic sustainability.
