Traders And Residents In Udenu Local Government Stage Protest Over Aggressive Tax Enforcement In Rural Enugu Communities

UDENU, ENUGU STATE — Business activities in Udenu Local Government Area ground to a halt as local shop owners, artisans, and rural traders staged a protest against escalating tax demands. Protesters expressed outrage over levy assessments ranging between ₦50,000 and ₦100,000 imposed on small village stores and informal trading outlets.

​Demonstrators reported that enforcement teams—accompanied by armed security personnel and individuals identifying as revenue agents—entered rural markets and trade premises to demand immediate compliance, creating widespread tension among local business owners. Local residents stated that while tax drives have been widely discussed across urban centers, the aggressive enforcement within rural communities has severely impacted small-scale livelihoods already struggling under current economic conditions.

​Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a long-serving staff member at the Udenu Local Government Council clarified that the ongoing levy drive does not originate from local government administration. The official noted that in over two decades of public service at the council, local trade levies were never structured at such rates, indicating that the current enforcement stems from broader state-level revenue collection policies and unified tax initiatives.
