Tragedy In Enugu: MainPower Electricity Worker Electrocuted During Maintenance In Udi
ENUGU, NIGERIA — Tragedy has struck the power sector in Enugu State following the death of an operations staff member attached to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), who sustained a fatal electric shock during a maintenance operation in Eke, Udi Local Government Area.
The deceased, identified as Mr. Samson Okechi, was a Team Lead attached to the company’s 9th Mile District. The incident occurred at a 50kVA/11kV pole-mounted distribution substation when Okechi was carrying out scheduled maintenance duties. Following the electric shock, he was rushed to Our Saviour Hospital in Ngwo, where the attending physician pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Confirming the incident, MEDL Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, dismissed social media rumors attributing the casualty to foul play or sabotage, clarifying that official safety isolation protocols had been initiated prior to the maintenance attempt. The matter has been formally logged with the Ngwo Police Division, while the electricity distribution firm has inaugurated an internal investigative panel to determine the root cause of the accident and address operational safety gaps.
The loss comes months after another company linesman, Mr. Isaac Dike, died under similar circumstances during a substation intervention in the Ekulu East Estate area of Enugu. MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited assured stakeholders that corrective measures will be enforced across all service districts pending the outcome of the comprehensive investigation.
