UBAHU COMMUNITY RAISES ALARM OVER ALLEGED DISPLACEMENT DEMOLITION , AND LACK OF COMPENSATION IN ENUGU
The growing outcry from residents of Ubahu Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State has drawn public attention to the sensitive issue of ancestral land acquisition, displacement, and the rights of local communities in the face of ongoing development projects.
According to reports and concerns raised by members of the community, many families in Ubahu allege that large portions of their ancestral lands and residential properties have been taken over without adequate consultation, mutual agreement, or compensation.
The situation has reportedly left several residents, including women, children, and elderly persons, displaced and facing severe emotional and economic hardship.
Community stakeholders maintain that while they are not opposed to infrastructural development and modernization, such projects must be carried out in line with due process, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of affected citizens. They argue that development initiatives should include transparent engagement with host communities, proper notice, fair compensation, and clear resettlement arrangements where necessary.
Residents further expressed concern that the current situation could deepen tensions and erode public trust if urgent steps are not taken to address the grievances of affected families.
Many have therefore called on the Enugu State Government, relevant federal authorities, civil society organizations, and human rights groups to intervene and ensure peaceful dialogue and lawful resolution of the matter.
Observers note that land-related disputes remain highly sensitive because ancestral lands often represent more than property alone, serving as symbols of heritage, identity, economic survival, and generational history for indigenous communities.
As public reactions continue to grow, concerned citizens are urging all parties involved to prioritize justice, transparency, and humane engagement in order to prevent further hardship and preserve peace within the affected community.
