Where Are Our Spiritual Shepherds? A Desperate Cry for Religious Leaders to Break Their Deafening Silence on Enugu’s Bloodshed and Tyranny

The Church has historically stood as the unyielding bastion of truth, the defender of the vulnerable, and the fearless voice crying out against oppression when the secular corridors of power run dark. Yet, in the face of the ongoing reign of terror, politically motivated bloodshed, and violent intimidation plaguing Enugu State, a heavy, unsettling quietness has settled over our spiritual institutions.

Not a single bishop—whether from the Catholic hierarchy or the Anglican communion—has stepped forward to publicly condemn the thuggery and state-sanctioned violence terrorizing the populace. The Pentecostal leadership and prominent pastors from various ministries have likewise chosen an inexplicable silence while innocent lives are cut short. Is this the standard of moral courage we are expected to pass down? Is neutrality in the face of murder and wickedness what it means to represent Christ?

So far, the towering exception to this widespread timidity has been the fearless stand taken by Fada Mentor Ehioma, who refused to cower in the presence of deceit. Directing a scathing, unvarnished truth straight to the seat of power, Fada Mentor boldly challenged Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah over his dismissive narrative surrounding the recent violence, asking the ultimate accountability question:

“In your address, you said nobody died and that the person was only injured. Why did you lie to your people?”

That is the question on the lips of every grieving family and every exploited citizen in Enugu State. When an administration attempts to sweep human blood under the carpet, downplay tragic losses, and trade the lives of the poor for political survival, silence from the spiritual leadership is no longer mere neutrality—it is active complicity.

To remain quiet while political thugs run amok, traditional rulers are arbitrarily suspended for receiving opposition figures, and struggling citizens are brutalized is a monumental betrayal of the moral fabric of our society. Christianity calls us to be peacemakers, but true peace can never be built on a foundation of unaddressed bloodshed and institutionalized lies.

Our religious leaders must find their voice, cast aside political correctness, and demand absolute truth, justice, and accountability from those holding the instruments of state power. The blood of the innocent cries out from the ground, and the people deserve spiritual shepherds who will stand with them in their darkest hour, not hide behind closed doors!
