Youth Minister Clarifies NYSC Uniform Comment After Adire Proposal Sparks Debate

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified his comments on a possible redesign of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform following public criticism over suggestions that Adire could form part of the new outfit.

The debate followed the Federal Government's announcement of sweeping reforms to the NYSC approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The reforms, unveiled on June 29, are aimed at transforming the 53-year-old scheme into a more skills-driven and youth-focused programme through an expanded six-week orientation, specialised career streams, safer deployment of corps members, and a new civilian-led operational structure.

However, comments by the minister during discussions on the proposed reforms, in which he mentioned Adire as a possible design option for the NYSC uniform, generated mixed reactions on social media.

Among those who reacted was public affairs commentator Morris Monye, who argued that Adire and Ankara should not become the official uniform for all corps members because they are associated with a particular region of the country.

He maintained that the current khaki uniform is neutral, detribalised, and symbolic of national unity, stressing that the NYSC remains one of the few programmes that genuinely promotes integration by exposing young Nigerians to different cultures.

Monye further urged the Federal Government to focus on addressing the fundamental challenges facing the scheme, including improving entrepreneurship training and the welfare of corps members, rather than making cosmetic changes such as redesigning uniforms or ceremonies.

Responding to the controversy, Minister Olawande clarified that no final decision has been taken on the proposed uniform redesign. He explained that discussions are still ongoing and that any eventual design would be guided by professionalism, durability, functionality, and national identity rather than regional considerations.

The minister also urged Nigerians to focus on the broader benefits of the approved NYSC reforms, which are expected to strengthen youth development, improve employability, and enhance national unity once the necessary legal amendments are approved by the National Assembly.
