COURT HANDS FORMER POWER MINISTER LONG JAIL TERM IN HIGH-PROFILE CORRUPTION CASE
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has delivered judgment in a major corruption trial involving a former Minister of Power, finding him guilty of offences connected to the mismanagement and diversion of funds earmarked for critical electricity infrastructure projects in Nigeria. The case, which has drawn nationwide attention, centered on allegations that billions of naira meant for power development projects were improperly handled through a network of companies and contracts.
According to the court proceedings, the prosecution established that public funds allocated for key national projects were diverted in ways that violated financial regulations and procurement laws. The funds in question were linked to major hydroelectric power initiatives intended to improve electricity supply across the country.
The court ruled that the defendant engaged in financial transactions that amounted to corruption and abuse of office. In delivering the judgment, the judge emphasized that public office holders must be held accountable for how they manage national resources, especially in sectors as critical as power and infrastructure.
Following the conviction, a lengthy custodial sentence was imposed, marking one of the most significant rulings in recent anti-corruption efforts targeting high-ranking former government officials. Security agencies were also directed to ensure the enforcement of the judgment.
Legal analysts have described the ruling as a strong signal that the judiciary is willing to pursue accountability regardless of the status of those involved, while anti-corruption advocates say it could serve as a deterrent to future financial misconduct in public office.
