Doctors Threaten N1bn Lawsuit Against EFCC Over Hospital Raid in Akwa Ibom
Fresh controversy has erupted in Akwa Ibom State after medical practitioners under the Nigerian Medical Association accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) of assaulting hospital workers during an operation at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
The doctors, who addressed journalists on Wednesday, threatened to file a ₦1 billion lawsuit against the anti-graft agency over what they described as physical, emotional, and professional damages caused during the incident.
According to reports, the EFCC operatives visited the hospital to verify a medical report linked to an ongoing fraud investigation. However, the situation reportedly escalated after attempts were made to arrest a senior medical official within the hospital premises.
Witnesses alleged that the operation caused panic within the hospital environment, with claims that some staff members were manhandled while tear gas and warning shots were allegedly fired during the confrontation.
Medical officials insisted that hospitals should remain protected environments where patients and health workers can operate without fear or intimidation. They also demanded public apologies, disciplinary action against officers involved, and compensation for affected staff members.
The EFCC, however, maintained that its operatives acted professionally and stated that the visit was necessary to authenticate documents connected to a fraud case before a Federal High Court.
The incident has since triggered widespread reactions across the country, with many Nigerians debating the conduct of security agencies within sensitive public institutions such as hospitals.
