ENUGU 2027: NWAKAIBIE, OCHO AND OHAA URGED TO CHAMPION PEACE AND REJECT POLITICAL THUGGERY
ENUGU — Three governorship contenders in Enugu State—Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obodoeze Chukwuma Ocho of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Hon. Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa of the New Democratic Congress (NDC)—have reportedly closed ranks against political thuggery, amid growing concerns about possible confrontations in the state's political landscape.
The reported development, which has not been independently verified, underscores the importance of protecting democratic participation and ensuring that political competition remains peaceful, lawful and free from intimidation.
NO POLITICAL AMBITION JUSTIFIES INTIMIDATION OR VIOLENCE!
In a democratic society, every candidate has the right to organise, campaign and seek public support without fear. Equally, citizens must be free to attend political gatherings, express their opinions and support candidates of their choice without intimidation or threats.
Political rhetoric suggesting retaliation or a “fire-for-fire” approach raises serious concerns. When intimidation is met with counter-intimidation, political disagreements can escalate into violence, putting supporters, innocent residents, businesses and livelihoods at risk.
There can be no meaningful victory when political rivalry results in bloodshed, destruction or fear among the people.
Any collective commitment to ending political thuggery must go beyond public declarations. It should be reflected in practical measures, including documenting incidents, supporting victims, reporting alleged offences through lawful channels and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.
Security agencies also have a responsibility to investigate reported incidents promptly, impartially and professionally. Political affiliation, personal connections or proximity to those in authority must not determine how complaints are handled or whether justice is pursued.
The responsibility extends to every political contender and their supporters. Candidates must unequivocally condemn violence, discourage inflammatory rhetoric, restrain their supporters from unlawful conduct and reject revenge as a response to provocation.
Anyone seeking the highest political office in Enugu State should demonstrate a commitment to protecting the lives, rights and freedoms of the people.
ENUGU IS NOT A WAR FRONT. PUBLIC OFFICE MUST BE PURSUED THROUGH DEMOCRATIC MEANS, NOT FEAR OR INTIMIDATION.
The future of Enugu State should be determined by competing ideas, credible records, constructive policy debates and the freely expressed will of voters. Political differences should create opportunities for dialogue and accountability, not become excuses for threats, violence or the suppression of opposing voices.
As political activities continue to attract public attention, all stakeholders must work towards an environment where candidates can campaign freely, supporters can participate peacefully and citizens can make their choices without fear.
