ENUGU COUNCIL POLLS IN CRISIS AS NDC THREATENS BOYCOTT OVER ENSIEC ACTIONS, EXPELS SKC OGBONNIA
The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened to boycott the upcoming local government elections, accusing the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) of deliberately sabotaging its participation by withholding vital electoral materials.
Following an emergency meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) in Enugu, the party declared that ENSIEC’s refusal to release election materials due to the NDC represents a calculated attempt to exclude the party from the ballot, amounting to an abuse of administrative power and a direct violation of constitutional guarantees to fair political participation.
State Party Secretary Nebo Chukwujekwu Emmanuel emphasized that participating in an election without access to necessary statutory materials would serve only to legitimize a flawed and uncredible process, warning that the party will officially withdraw unless the electoral body immediately rectifies the situation.
In a separate resolution, the state leadership ratified the expulsion of Mr. SKC Ogbonnia from the party following recommendations from his Ward Executive Committee in Awgu Local Government Area. Ogbonnia, who had been under indefinite suspension since May 2026 for gross misconduct and disloyalty, was expelled after defiantly obtaining the party's senatorial nomination form despite his active suspension.
"No electoral management body has the constitutional authority to deny a registered political party access to its election materials or create obstacles capable of excluding it from an electoral process. This action constitutes a deliberate denial of our constitutional rights and an assault on democracy."
The NDC called on its members across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State to remain calm and law-abiding as the expulsion resolution is forwarded to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for final ratification.
