Enugu Residents Protest Alleged Excessive Rent Tax Assessments Amid Revenue Drive Concerns

Tension is reportedly rising among residents and property owners in Enugu State following allegations of heavy tax assessments linked to rental properties as the state government intensifies efforts to boost internally generated revenue.

The controversy gained attention after residents and concerned groups accused authorities of imposing what they described as “excessive” rent and property-related charges on landlords across different parts of the state. Social media discussions and public reactions have continued to grow, with many expressing fears that the development may ultimately lead to higher rents for ordinary tenants.

Some landlords reportedly claimed they received assessment notices running into hundreds of thousands of naira annually, sparking complaints over the economic pressure on property owners amid the current cost of living challenges.

Critics of the policy argue that while revenue generation is important for infrastructural development, taxation must be balanced with the economic realities facing residents and business owners in the state.

The issue has also reignited wider debates surrounding housing affordability in Enugu, where residents have previously protested rising rent costs, agency fees, and housing-related charges affecting low and middle-income earners.

Supporters of the state government, however, insist that reforms in the tax system are aimed at improving transparency, expanding revenue, and supporting ongoing development projects across the state. Previous government statements have also denied allegations of excessive taxation, maintaining that certain property-related charges were reviewed and harmonised to reduce duplication.

As reactions continue to spread across social and political circles, many residents are calling for dialogue between the government, landlords, and relevant stakeholders to prevent further tension and ensure policies are implemented fairly and transparently.
