INEC Confirms Submission of Membership Registers by All 22 Political Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all 22 registered political parties in the country have complied with the requirement for submission of membership registers in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
According to the commission, the submission process was completed following an extension earlier granted to political parties after concerns were raised over the initial deadline contained in the revised election timetable and schedule of activities.
INEC disclosed that all political parties successfully submitted their registers on or before May 8, 2026, which was two days ahead of the extended deadline approved by the commission.
The electoral body explained that the adjustment became necessary after consultations with party representatives and was aimed at aligning the process with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, particularly regarding timelines for party primaries and membership verification procedures.
Under the revised timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, while membership registers must be submitted at least 21 days before the conduct of such primaries.
INEC further stated that the submitted registers will now undergo verification and review processes in accordance with electoral laws and guidelines governing political party operations in Nigeria.
The commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparent, credible, free, and inclusive elections as preparations for the 2027 polls continue nationwide.
Political observers say the development marks another major step in the build-up to the next general elections, as political parties intensify internal activities, consultations, and candidate selection processes across the country.
