Mixed Reactions Trail Enugu Town Union Leaders’ Endorsement of Governor Peter Mbah
Political reactions have continued to trail the recent endorsement exercise reportedly organised by the Enugu State Council of Presidents-General of Town Unions in support of Governor Peter Mbah.
While organisers of the event reportedly claimed participation from hundreds of communities across the state, critics and opposition voices have described the endorsement as politically motivated and disconnected from the realities facing many residents.
According to opposing political groups and concerned citizens, the endorsement does not necessarily reflect the genuine mood of ordinary people struggling with economic hardship, rising living costs, and growing concerns over taxation and governance.
Some residents argue that although the current administration has continued to promote projects such as Smart Green Schools, Type-2 hospitals, farm estate initiatives, and Enugu Air, many communities are yet to experience direct improvements in areas such as healthcare delivery, employment opportunities, and economic relief.
Business owners, traders, transport operators, and artisans have also continued to express concerns over increasing tax burdens and revenue enforcement measures, which critics say are placing additional pressure on small businesses already battling harsh economic conditions.
Amid the growing political debate, supporters of Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji have intensified efforts to present him as a strong alternative voice ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State.
His supporters describe him as a grassroots-oriented leader capable of reconnecting governance with the people and prioritising policies focused on economic relief, inclusiveness, and community development.
Political analysts say the reactions surrounding the endorsement reflect the early stages of what is expected to become an increasingly competitive political atmosphere in Enugu as different camps begin mobilising support ahead of 2027.
Observers also note that beyond endorsements and political declarations, the eventual outcome of the election may largely depend on how residents assess governance, economic realities, and leadership performance over the coming months.
