JAMB Adjusts Admission Requirements as Mathematics No Longer Mandatory for Some University Courses
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) has introduced a significant policy adjustment affecting university admission requirements across Nigeria.
According to the Board’s Director of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, the new guideline stipulates that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for admission into some selected university courses.
He made the disclosure during an appearance on the NTA programme Good Morning Nigeria, where he explained that the decision forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving access and flexibility in tertiary education admissions.
The Board also announced that printing of the original 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result slips will commence from Monday, May 18, 2026.
In addition, the Board has activated the UTME change of institution and course process, allowing candidates who wish to modify their choices to do so through any accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre nationwide.
JAMB advised candidates to ensure they carry out all changes only through approved centres to avoid errors or invalid transactions.
The policy adjustment is expected to generate widespread reactions among stakeholders in the education sector, as it represents a notable shift in traditional university entry requirements in Nigeria.
