Nigeria Strengthens Ebola Preparedness, Activates Emergency Response Measures

The Federal Government has stepped up measures to prevent the possible importation of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus into Nigeria following outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

Health authorities have emphasized that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, urging citizens to remain calm while adhering to public health advisories issued by relevant agencies.

As part of the enhanced preparedness strategy, authorities have strengthened screening procedures at airports, seaports, and land borders. Travelers are being subjected to health declaration requirements, temperature screening, and risk assessments aimed at early detection and containment of any potential cases.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has classified the risk of Ebola importation into Nigeria as high due to increasing international travel, regional outbreaks, and porous borders. The agency has consequently intensified surveillance, laboratory readiness, and emergency response coordination nationwide.

Health officials say rapid response teams, isolation facilities, disease surveillance systems, and emergency operations centers are being strengthened across the country to ensure swift containment should any suspected case emerge.

Nigeria's preparedness efforts are also drawing from lessons learned during the country's successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, which was widely recognized as one of Africa's most effective public health responses.

Public health experts continue to encourage citizens to maintain proper hygiene practices, report unusual symptoms promptly, and rely only on information from official government and health authorities.

Authorities have reiterated that vigilance, early detection, and public cooperation remain the most effective tools in preventing the spread of the disease.
