Obunike Ohaegbu Responds to Kenneth Okonkwo, Denies Allegations of Bribery Claims Against Peter Obi
Obunike Ohaegbu has issued a detailed response to remarks made by Kenneth Okonkwo, expressing surprise over what he described as a misrepresentation of his earlier statements and insisting that his comments were being wrongly interpreted.
In the statement, Ohaegbu maintained that he has never referred to Peter Obi as a criminal, nor did he allege that the former presidential candidate requested or received any form of bribe. He challenged Okonkwo to provide evidence of such claims, stating that no such assertions were made in his original remarks.
He stressed that public discourse should be guided by facts and verifiable evidence, rather than “deflection” or “cut-and-join narratives.” According to him, any attempt to attribute statements to him that he did not make amounts to misrepresentation.
Ohaegbu further referenced ongoing legal considerations surrounding the matter, noting that issues involving the former Labour Party presidential candidate are already subject to judicial processes. He emphasized the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence, arguing that no individual should be labelled guilty before a court verdict.
The statement also contained broader reflections on political discourse in Nigeria, where Ohaegbu criticized what he described as the use of insinuations and threats in public disagreements. He urged that political communication should remain anchored on evidence and professional responsibility.
While maintaining a firm tone, Ohaegbu concluded by reaffirming his personal relationship with Okonkwo, describing him as a friend despite their disagreement, and wished him well moving forward.
