Uzodinma Warns Aspirants: “Only Risk What You Can Afford to Lose” Amid Rising Cost of Nigerian Politics
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has cautioned aspiring politicians to carefully evaluate the financial risks involved in contesting elections in Nigeria, amid rising concerns over the escalating cost of political participation.
Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress) event in Imo State, the governor advised aspirants to only commit resources they can afford to lose, noting that the current political environment has become highly expensive and financially demanding.
His remarks come at a time when nomination forms for major political offices reportedly cost tens of millions of naira, while full campaign cycles often run into billions, placing significant pressure on aspirants and political stakeholders.
The governor’s comment has drawn widespread attention, especially as more than 150 aspirants across various positions are reportedly purchasing nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The issue has also sparked discussions within political circles, with concerns that Nigeria’s growing monetisation of politics is discouraging participation and increasing financial strain on contestants who often end up in debt after elections.
Observers say the governor’s statement reflects a broader frustration within the political system, where elections are increasingly seen as capital-heavy ventures rather than service-driven contests.
The remarks have since gone viral online, generating reactions ranging from agreement to satire, as Nigerians continue to debate the role of money in shaping political outcomes ahead of the 2027 elections.
