Peter Obi Calls for Unity, Defends Pastor Adeboye Amid Rising Online Criticism and Ethnic Narratives

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (Nigeria Democratic Congress) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has called on young Nigerians to promote unity and resist attempts to deepen ethnic and religious divisions in the country.

In a public message addressed to young Nigerians, Obi warned against narratives that exploit identity differences for political gain, noting that such strategies have historically weakened national cohesion and distracted citizens from issues of governance, competence, and development.

He specifically cautioned against what he described as “subtle and sophisticated” attempts to inflame divisions ahead of elections, urging Nigerians to verify information and reject manipulation regardless of its source.

Obi also defended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, describing him as a respected religious leader who has consistently preached peace, unity, and reconciliation over decades of public ministry.

According to him, it would be unfair to place expectations on elderly religious leaders to take up roles that should be driven by younger, more active citizens, stressing that national transformation must be led by the youth.

He further warned that those promoting divisive narratives often do so not out of concern for public interest, but to weaken social bonds and create distrust among citizens.

While some supporters, including former education minister Oby Ezekwesili, backed the message as a call for unity, critics argue the intervention may also carry political undertones ahead of upcoming party primaries and the 2027 general elections.

Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to focus on building a united nation anchored on truth, peace, and shared responsibility, reiterating his belief that “A New Nigeria is possible.”
