NDC Media Appointments Spark Obidient Backlash, Questions Over Party Unity
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the appointment of Agada Abuh Theophilus as Director of New Media and Strategic Communications and Brian Dennis as Deputy Director, describing both men as experienced professionals expected to strengthen the party’s communication strategy.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, the party praised Agada’s background in political communications, public relations, and development communication, while highlighting Brian Dennis’ experience in strategic and political communications.
However, the appointments have generated controversy within sections of the Obidient Movement, a major support base of NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi.
In a statement circulated by a group identifying itself as members of the Obidient Movement, the appointment of Agada was strongly rejected. The group alleged that Agada had previously made public comments critical of Peter Obi and his supporters, arguing that his elevation to a key communications role sends the wrong message to millions of Obidients.
The group further called on the NDC leadership to explain the rationale behind the appointment and demanded greater respect for supporters of Peter Obi within the party structure.
The statement also questioned the role of Obidient Movement leader Tanko Yunusa, asking him to clarify his position on issues affecting the movement and its relationship with allied political platforms.
Among its demands, the group called for a review of the appointment, a public explanation from the party leadership, and assurances that individuals perceived as hostile to Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement would not occupy sensitive communications positions.
As of the time of filing this report, the NDC has not publicly responded to the objections raised by the group, while the appointments remain in effect. The development highlights ongoing debates over party cohesion and the relationship between the NDC and supporters of Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
